Home Soirée: Opera Gala

Over the years our Opera Gala has turned into our most favorite Home Soirées featuring our principal singers from the opera cast. Led by our own Opera Director and bass-baritone Keith Miller, this event turns one of our gorgeous mountain homes into an opera stage. Voices normally heard at opera houses such as the Met in New York will be heard in the intimacy of a great room, singing beautiful arias from the most favorite operas. The singers will be accompanied by Laurent Philippe on the piano.

Symphony Performance: Gypsy Cimbalom

Kálmán Balogh is one of the foremost Hungarian cimbalom players, descending from a famous dynasty of Hungarian Gypsy musicians. His virtuosity is matched only by his understanding and respect of his heritage. A graduate of Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music of Budapest, he has completed many successful tours throughout the world with various ensembles, including well over a dozen tours in North America. The cimbalom, a sort of oversized hammer dulcimer played with mallets like a vibraphone, possesses piano like percussive abilities to drive a band rhythmically or take the melodic lead. In Kálmán Balogh's expert hands, the cimbalom can do both simultaneously. His mastery of this unique and rare Hungarian folk instrument has mesmerized audiences.

Program:

György Ligeti: Concerto Romanesc

Johannes Brahms, Hungarian Dances 1,4,5,6

Bela Bartok: Romanian Folk Tunes

Anton Dvorak: Symphony No 7, op.70, D minor

Home Soirée: Hungarian Gypsy Jazz

Kálmán Balogh Gypsy Cimbalom Trio is the dynamic merging of music from the old and new worlds. Balogh continues a fabled European musical tradition harking back to the collaboration of masters like gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli, connecting ancient folk music traditions of Central and Eastern Europe with the chord progressions and swinging rhythm of jazz. Balogh's cimbalom becomes a new and compelling voice centering the Trio, which is enhanced by acoustic violin/viola and acoustic bass. Similarities in jazz and traditional folk music, such as improvisation and a kaleidoscope of emotional expressions, are immediately evident.

The Trio includes excellent musicians who have worked with Balogh extensively. Robert Lakatos, a viola and violin player from Slovakia, is steeped in classical music training and played with important classical orchestras, but always gravitated toward folk and world music. He plays in several groups ranging from classical to folk and jazz genres. Robert’s band, the RÉV, has become a popular band in Hungary and Slovakia.  Bassist Csaba Novák is one of the most versatile bass players in Hungary, familiar with gypsy style, klezmer, folk music, jazz and world music.

Divine Family: Children's Opera

The Musicians of Bremen, composed by Susan Hulsman Bingham

A donkey, dog, cat and rooster are aging animals whose master feels they are useless and expendable. We see the donkey's master and mistress at their meanest. The Donkey determines to go to Bremen to perform and is joined by the other animals. They find a house which the Robbers (a singing group!) have claimed, so they are safe for the night. The animals continue on their way to Bremen -- any place where people can live and work with hope and love and inspiration.

Have a Beer With Beethoven

Beer, Beethoven, Barn, Brats and a lot of fun is guaranteed at this very unique event with our Festival Symphony Orchestra. It is just a coincidence that our conductors name also begins with a "B", but a great one; once designed as a different form of classical music entertainment this show has become one of the festival's signature events. We serve brats, Sauerkraut, Pretzels and beer (included in the ticket price) and then Maestro Bachmann introduces the symphony from stage with our Festival Symphony Orchestra, followed by a concert with an overture and Beethoven symphony. An ideal event for the entire family.

Program:

Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program Opera

Donizetti: L'Elisir D'Amore

Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore is one of the staples of the comic opera repertory. The plot hinges on whether earnest but dim-witted Nemorino will snag Adina, the flirtatious heroine. She's a tease who takes up with Belcore, an army sergeant, to make Nemorino jealous. After numerous (and humorous) plot twists that include a phony love potion, it all ends happily. Adina and Nemorino declare their love for each other, Belcore is dumped, and the fraudulent Dulcamara does a landslide business in love potions. It's all a fast-moving bundle of fun,and a wonderful show for the entire family.

Cast comprised of participents from the Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program/ Justin Johnson, stage director/ David Syrus, opera conductor/ Festival Symphony Orchestra

Gypsy Jazz In Paradise

While the history and music of Gypsy Jazz is relatively undocumented, Django Reinhardt was one of the first musicians to be recognized for his dazzling talent in this genre. The toast of Paris in the 30's, Reinhardt entertained the likes of Josephine Baker, Picasso and Hemingway. The Festival's "Gypsy Jazz in Paradise" will capture the history and culture of this soulful swing music for three days.

Ben Powell’s abilities as a multi-stylistic violinist have allowed him to perform with some of the world’s greatest artists, irrespective of musical genre: from such pop and jazz icons as Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, Stevie Winwood, Philip Bailey and Rosa Passos to internationally famous classical conductors, including Sir Roger Norrington, Marin Alsop, Yan Pascal Tortelier and Keith Lockhart. He’s performed at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and the BBC Proms, and he’s as familiar a presence at international jazz festivals and live music clubs as he is in the world of Early Music and the classical concert hall.

Founded in 2003, The Hot Club of Detroit rapidly accumulated accolades and audiences over the next several years, including a first-place win in the 2004 Detroit International Jazz Festival competition and multiple Detroit Music Awards. Their 2006 self-titled debut, while slightly more traditional than later releases, established their broad-minded approach to the Django resurgence.

Since that time, it's become increasingly evident that their inspiration comes as much from the spirit of Reinhardt's playing as by its much-copied sound. While they've maintained some recognizable elements - the absence of drums, the percussive "la pompe" rhythm guitar technique - the Motor City quintet apply those elements to a decidedly modern sound, refusing to be constrained by allegiance to some time-honored, purist ideal.

Featured band: Hot Club of Detroit and Ben Powell. Ben Powell's set will begin at 7:30 and will be followed by Hot Club of Detroit.

Gypsy Jazz In Paradise (Brunch)

Hot Club Sandwich brings its’ unique character to the acoustic swing and Gypsy jazz pioneered by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli’s Quintet of the Hot Club of France.  Adding original compositions, light hearted vocal numbers, clever arrangements and elements of Latin American acoustic music, HCS creates its own voice.  Collectively and individually, Hot Club Sandwich draws from a diverse musical background encompassing many parts of the acoustic music globe.
